Farm Truck’s rotating menu features seasonal ingredients from the local area, with inventive combinations that keep it interesting for its patrons. They source their bread from local bakeries and their veggies from local farms. Met at the window by a cheerful order taker with amazing eye makeup skills, I visited the truck on a Thursday lunch session at The Porch at 30th Street. I was in the mood for tacos, so I opted for the buffalo chicken tacos served with housemade ramp blue cheese sauce, citrus pickled red onion, and arugula.

These tacos were my favorite thing I ate from the truck. The homemade blue cheese sauce was herby and tasty, the tender pulled chicken tossed in buffalo sauce was flavorful, the arugula provided a nice peppery counterpoint, and the pickled onions gave a nice punch of acid to round out the meal. There was also some kind of crunchy component, almost like a puffed rice cereal or something on it that was a great textural element. (It wasn’t in the description on the menu board, so it was a nice surprise). My only complaint was that I wished there were more tacos on my plate!

On my next trip, I decided to try the Al Pastor Banh Mi sandwich. Al Pastor is my favorite kind of taco, and banh mi sandwiches are always a good thing in my book. The traditional Banh Mi sandwich has Vietnamese origins, served on a crusty french baguette, some kind of protein, and topped with pickled veggies, jalapeños, and cilantro. The Farm truck version had most of that, but was also topped with a pineapple relish.

While I enjoyed the sandwich, I was a little perplexed by the addition of whole grain mustard seeds in the relish. While whole grain mustard is my favorite kind of mustard, its strong flavor seemed to take away from the other excellent flavors of the sandwich. However, I do think the crusty bread was perfect, and the pickled daikon, shredded carrots, and cucumber were heavenly. The jalapeño was sliced thinly and gave just the right amount of heat. The crispy shallots were crunchy and delightful. The pork could have used a bit more flavor, but again it may just have been drowned out by the flavor of the mustard seeds. The pork was, however, tender and perfectly cooked. The sandwich was also described as having a “miso aioli” but this too got lost. I did appreciate the size of the sandwich, it filled me up and I was not able to finish it. My personal opinion is that there are too many flavors going on in this sandwich, but it seems to be one of their more popular items.

Overall, I did enjoy the fresh, seasonal ingredients and I’m interested to return and try some of their other items. Take a peek at the menus from the days I visited below (click to enlarge). In the future, I would be interested in trying the farm burger and any tacos on the board. The shrimp tacos sound delicious!
