Royal Zarasa truck

Royal Zarasa is a labor of love launched by Terrance and Tiffany Hopkins-Bey in February 2018 as a means to share Tiffany’s love of comfort food. With dishes like BBQ brisket, shrimp & grits, chicken & waffles, salmon slaw sandwiches, and chicken wings, Royal Zarasa’s southern inspired menu made it hard to decide on what to have for dinner as we visited Love City Brewing.

What in the world is a byrek? I had to consult my good friend Google on this matter. I learned it was a phyllo dough wrapped pocket of cheeses, veggies, and/or meats and baked until golden and served warm. These delicious pouches of yumminess hail from Eastern European countries like Turkey, Albania, and Croatia. They are made in all different shapes and sizes. The Authentik Byrek truck serves them in a large pie-shaped wedge.

Deke’s BBQ graced our presence at Wissahickon Brewing Company, so I headed over to check out their offerings. From my brief research (that is, drooling over their photos on their Facebook page), I quickly learned that their Brisket Cheesesteak was their specialty. Their take on Philadelphia’s iconic sandwich included their tender smoked brisket with BBQ and cheese sauce. I read that it was the #1 on Thrillist’s Top 50 things to eat in Philadelphia before you die. As we approached the truck, my husband saw the many signs for the brisket cheesesteak and decided to order it. Continue reading →

LoveCity

While I am a lover of Thai food, I am not very well-versed on Laos cuisine, so I was excited to hear that Flaming Basil was making an appearance at what is becoming my favorite bar in Philadelphia, that is, Love City Brewing Company. We sat down with our beer and perused the menu and decided to order a sampling of a couple appetizers and a couple entrees to see what they had to offer. Everything we tried was delicious!

SoPhiE, which is short for South Philly East, is a shared food truck sponsored by the Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Associations Coalition (SEAMAAC). More about that later. On this particular night my friends and I stopped for drinks at Love City Brewing, and the food truck was run by Chef Zing Thulai, offering Burmese fusion options. My first order for the table was two sushi rolls, the Chinland Roll and the A Chai Roll. I say “first” because I went back for seconds, it was THAT GOOD.

The Little Sicilian

Having spent some of my childhood in Sicily, I was intrigued by the concept of a truck specializing in Sicilian cuisine. More specifically, arancini or “riceballs,” which are small balls of arborio rice (used to make risotto), traditionally filled with meat and peas, then rolled in breadcrumbs and deep fried until golden. The name “arancini” literally means “little orange” which likely refers to its appearance resembling the small fruit, as you can see in this photo: Continue reading →

The Dos Hermanos taco truck is a busy, busy eatery. It took me over a month for our schedules to align so that I could sample enough of their goodies to give a proper review. Dos Hermanos (Spanish for “two brothers”) is run by Manuel and Gabriel Lezama. The pair of brothers were on a mission to bring authentic Mexican tacos to Philadelphia. They make everything–including their tortillas–completely from scratch. It’s the small details like this that make this truck truly special. Continue reading →

It was a blazing hot day, one of those sticky humid July summer days where the air feels thick, when I was in search of a truck that was not where it said it would be. Having made the trek over to Drexel University already, I took a peek at the trucks that were there and decided Pitruco Pizza would be lunch. I was intrigued by the glow of the wood-fired oven inside the truck, as well as the interesting combinations displayed on their menu.  Continue reading →

Farm Truck’s rotating menu features seasonal ingredients from the local area, with inventive combinations that keep it interesting for its patrons. They source their bread from local bakeries and their veggies from local farms. Met at the window by a cheerful order taker with amazing eye makeup skills, I visited the truck on a Thursday lunch session at The Porch at 30th Street. I was in the mood for tacos, so I opted for the buffalo chicken tacos served with housemade ramp blue cheese sauce, citrus pickled red onion, and arugula.
