Burritos and Tacos Truck

Update: They named the truck El Guero Mexican Food Truck, so I am updating the title of this article. They appear to be doing really well, there is now always a line when I go there for lunch.

There’s a new taco truck on the Temple University campus, and they are serving up some delicious, authentic Mexican eats! I first visited this truck several weeks ago, and since then I have been back FOUR times. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. Because I have visited so many times I have a lot to share about this much welcomed new addition to the Temple food truck community.

The Dos Hermanos taco truck is a busy, busy eatery. It took me over a month for our schedules to align so that I could sample enough of their goodies to give a proper review. Dos Hermanos (Spanish for “two brothers”) is run by Manuel and Gabriel Lezama. The pair of brothers were on a mission to bring authentic Mexican tacos to Philadelphia. They make everything–including their tortillas–completely from scratch. It’s the small details like this that make this truck truly special. Continue reading →

Farm Truck’s rotating menu features seasonal ingredients from the local area, with inventive combinations that keep it interesting for its patrons. They source their bread from local bakeries and their veggies from local farms. Met at the window by a cheerful order taker with amazing eye makeup skills, I visited the truck on a Thursday lunch session at The Porch at 30th Street. I was in the mood for tacos, so I opted for the buffalo chicken tacos served with housemade ramp blue cheese sauce, citrus pickled red onion, and arugula. Mt. Airy Day

The annual Mt. Airy Day community festival took place on Saturday, May 5 on Germantown Avenue at the Cliveden historical park. This site was the exact spot where a Revolutionary War battle occurred. I volunteered to work at this event and also sampled a few of the food trucks that were parked on Germantown Avenue: Philly Fry, El Guaco Loco, and Pound Cake Heaven. All three trucks served up some tasty goodies!

The Lola Sandwich from Mucho Bueno

Every Thursday evening, food trucks park at the Weaver’s Way Co-Op store in the Mt. Airy section of Northwest Philadelphia. This week, the Mucho Bueno taco truck and Zsa’s Ice Cream were parked on the corner so we opted to have a dinner date seated alongside the trucks. Mucho Bueno is known for their creative Mexican-BBQ fusion tacos, but my husband and I decided to try the sandwiches instead. There were a lot of choices, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Sandwiches were large and served with a side of homemade tortilla chips. I was also pleased to find out that Mucho Bueno sources its ingredients locally. Even the tortillas for their tacos and chips are made in Philadelphia. The chicken and pork is smoked on their truck and the components of the sandwiches and tacos are homemade.

I must preface this post by saying that I spent fifteen years of my youth living all over California. Mexican food has to be exceptional for me to gush about it. That said, I thought Mexican Grill Stand was decent. The food was freshly prepared and the prices were excellent. Service was friendly and quick, and the portions were sizeable.

The first time I ate lunch on Temple’s campus, I visited this truck and ordered the pork with salsa verde and an order of chips & guacamole. I remember the chips were a bit stale and hard, so I just put the guacamole on my tacos. Delicious! However, a bit pricey at around $10 for 2 tacos and guac and a drink, compared to other trucks nearby. Most trucks on campus are closer to $5 and a lot of them give a free can of soda with a $5 purchase.

calle del sabor

Curry shrimp taco and al pastor tacos with fresh pineapple salsa

I sampled Calle del Sabor tacos at the Manayunk StrEAT food truck festival in September 2015. Spanish for “street flavor,” Calle del Sabor opened their truck in 2012. They have a varied menu with flavors such as Korean pork tacos, curry shrimp, beef brisket, and Baja fish tacos. Rotating specials are often available.

The items I chose were a la carte, so I chose 2 al pastor tacos and one curry shrimp. The shrimp was big and juicy, and bursting with spicy curry. You might be wondering why most of the third taco in the photo is gone. It’s because I was really hungry and I ate most of the shrimp taco before I could take a photo. It was my favorite taco of the two that I tried, and al pastor is usually my favorite.
