The Lola Sandwich from Mucho Bueno

Every Thursday evening, food trucks park at the Weaver’s Way Co-Op store in the Mt. Airy section of Northwest Philadelphia. This week, the Mucho Bueno taco truck and Zsa’s Ice Cream were parked on the corner so we opted to have a dinner date seated alongside the trucks. Mucho Bueno is known for their creative Mexican-BBQ fusion tacos, but my husband and I decided to try the sandwiches instead. There were a lot of choices, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Sandwiches were large and served with a side of homemade tortilla chips. I was also pleased to find out that Mucho Bueno sources its ingredients locally. Even the tortillas for their tacos and chips are made in Philadelphia. The chicken and pork is smoked on their truck and the components of the sandwiches and tacos are homemade.

As I stood in line for Eppy’s lunch truck trying to decide on which of the many choices available would become my lunch, a lady in line chatted with her friend.

“Remember when this was like, the ONLY truck on this street?”

“Yeah, this one is the OG, and still one of my favorites,” her friend reminisced.

When I brought the chicken cutlet sandwich and fries back to my office (pictured here), one of my coworkers said almost the same thing.

“Eppy’s? I have been going there for years. It’s so good!”

As I was walking past the Student Professional Organizations’ office, a smell of spices wafted out of the room. Some of my favorite students, officers from various student groups, sat in the room eating Indian food.

“What IS that?” I asked, my eyes widened. “And where did it come from?”

One of them offered me a bite of the Chicken Tikka. I asked the other, who is Indian, what he thought of the food.

“It’s good. Not very authentic but tastes good.”

I decided this would be my next venture for the blog. The next day I headed over to Samosa Deb’s, located in front of the Art building (why do they get so many of the best trucks over there??) and ordered the Chicken Tikka platter, which came with rice, pakora, veggies, and naan, all for $8.00.

I have been on hiatus from this blog because I recently moved and then subsequently got sick. Anyhow, on my first day of my new commute I accidentally got off the bus at the wrong stop and noticed this huge kawaii panda adorned with a jeweled crown and hugging bubble teas. I loved the art on the truck and it seemed totally fitting for a food truck outside the art building. I knew where I was going to have lunch!

BBQ chicken pizza and Chicken Taco pizza

This truck really lives up to its hype with creative pizza toppings. My favorite was the taco pizza, a perfect combination of two of my favorite foods. The sauce is some kind of hot sauce, covered with chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, and cheddar cheese. Everything tasted freshly made and the crust was firm and crispy. The slice was considerably smaller than the BBQ chicken pizza, but much thicker with all the toppings. Both slices were perfectly cooked and I was unable to finish the second slice because it was so big. Also super affordable because they have a special of 2 slices with toppings and a soda for $5.50! What a deal!

Burger Tank… tanked.

Alas, we have come to the day when I have to write a negative review. It so pains me to do so, since I love to support local businesses and the people that work there were super nice. Plus, I LOVE BURGERS. But after two visits, I’m just not a fan. 😦 The thing is, there is always a huge line, so I’m truly perplexed.

IMG_3823

As you can see, there is snow in this photo. This should tell you how long ago I visited the Burger Tank for the first time. I had to drag myself over there for the second visit, but I wanted to give it a fair chance, especially since during my first visit I was feeling particularly adventurous.

On my first visit, I had the Balsamic Burger. It was a strawberry balsamic burger with spinach, roasted red peppers, and American cheese. Sounded like it could be an interesting combination, if done right. Nope. Done wrong, it is awful. It was like a sweet strawberry jam on it, not a tart-vinegary balsamic jam with a hint of strawberry. Add in the red peppers and you have a really strange flavor combination. On top of that, the burger patty was way overcooked and dry. At least the sweet potato fries were crispy and tasty.

Trucks revisited!

Things have been pretty busy around here for the last week, so this post is going to show some other things I’ve tried from trucks I previously reviewed in this blog: Chicken Heaven, “Sexy” Green Truck, E&E’s Gourmet Express, and the Creperie.

Chicken Rancher Wrap from “Sexy” Green Truck

First up is in the photo above, the Chicken Rancher wrap from the Green Truck. It is featured on the lunch board to the left of the window. The chicken is breaded and comes wrapped in a toasted tortilla with lettuce, tomato, bacon, and ranch dressing.

Sweet & Spicy Chicken Wings with rice

I love Japanese food, but I have very little experience with teppanyaki. This truck on 12th street features both Japanese and Korean selections as well as some fusion between the two types of Asian cuisine. Teppanyaki, for those who have never had it, is a type of Japanese barbecue, using a iron grill to cook the food. This has been popularized by places like Benihana Grill, where diners are treated to a show as the chefs prepare their food. The chefs dazzle the guests with pizzazz and flair, flipping their utensils and lighting things on fire. Google “onion volcano” if you don’t know what I am talking about.

“Sexy” Green Truck

Tags

IMG_3840I was chatting with a friend of mine, who brought up the Green Truck as one of his favorites on campus. He said he refused to call it “sexy” but the breakfast egg pitas were excellent, especially when asparagus is in season and the asparagus egg pita was on the menu. I later found out that the Green Truck has a ton of breakfast and lunch items to choose from!

There is no shortage of choices here at E&E Gourmet, where photos of and menu signs surround the entire truck with everything from burgers to wraps to breakfast to rice platters and Middle Eastern selections. One morning, I was not feeling my usual breakfast of oatmeal or yogurt, so I stopped at the truck to check out the omelette choices.
