A newcomer in the Temple food truck scene, Taste of India has become a popular addition to the campus. Taste of India opened in Spring 2018 and attracts hungry lunch-goers with its aromas of curries and spices. Lately, there is always a line, which is always a great sign for a food truck.

Rice platters include your choice of chicken or one of many veggies, rice, yogurt, chutney, and a salad. (Be sure to specify if you want the yogurt and what kind of chutney you want). Combo platters include your choice of main dish with naan (flatbread), papad (a thin and crispy seasoned dough), yogurt, chutney, salad, and a soda. They also offer rotating specials from day to day.

My relationship with Jamaican D’s began back in 2010, when I worked on the Community College of Philadelphia campus and one of their trucks was parked right outside the building I worked in. I captured my thoughts on this food truck on my yelp page, in this harrowing account about some chicken wings I tried:

Updated review posted here!

There are so many trucks on campus serving very similar food, so it is nice to see something completely different to try. Four Brothers Loco Flavor serves up Puerto Rican favorites such as pastelillos (dough filled with meat), pernil or chicken with rice and beans, and sorullos (corn fritters) served with coffee for breakfast. They also have a nice selection of sandwiches including the roast pork, the Cubano, and the Tripleta which has pork, chicken, and ham.

With so many Korean trucks on campus, it is refreshing to find one that has so many customizable options. Kobawoo Express just recently moved from its previous location (on 12th Street) to Montgomery Avenue. Guests choose between a rice plate lunchbox, ramen, or kimchi bibimbap. The lunchbox comes with your choice of meat and two sides, and the bibimbap comes by itself for $4 or with two sides for $6. My favorite was the ramen, which is a huge bowl of steamy soup with your choice of meat for $6. The side dishes change daily and there are usually about 18-20 choices.

School is back in session, so the trucks are back! Some of them have moved locations, including this halal cart which used to be located on 13th Street in front of Speakman Hall. This, along with The Mexican truck and the two NY halal carts that were on the corner in front of Tuttleman are now located across the street from the Student Center, in front of Ritter Hall.

Now I must post a disclaimer here: I have started grad school at Temple so I won’t have as much leisure time to write these blog posts, but I’ll there are still places I haven’t visited so I’ll be sure to post semi-frequently. On to the review…

I had such high hopes for Top Bap, with all the fresh veggies going into my Bibim Bap bowl: carrots, spinach, turnips, bean sprouts, and mushrooms. Topped with an over-medium egg and sprinkled with sesame seeds, the dish looked like a colorful work of art. My problem is gochujang, a spicy Korean chili sauce. I don’t know if it’s that my palate for spicy food is just developing, if it’s not a taste I prefer, or if the depth of my spice-wussiness won’t let me enjoy gochujang, but every time I have it, it seems to overpower any other flavors or textures happening in Korean food. I am not a fan of kim chee, I don’t like Korean BBQ (as evidenced in my review of Cha Cha Truck), and even the dollop of gochujang under my egg sort of ruined this beautiful Bibim Bap bowl for me.

The Lola Sandwich from Mucho Bueno

Every Thursday evening, food trucks park at the Weaver’s Way Co-Op store in the Mt. Airy section of Northwest Philadelphia. This week, the Mucho Bueno taco truck and Zsa’s Ice Cream were parked on the corner so we opted to have a dinner date seated alongside the trucks. Mucho Bueno is known for their creative Mexican-BBQ fusion tacos, but my husband and I decided to try the sandwiches instead. There were a lot of choices, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Sandwiches were large and served with a side of homemade tortilla chips. I was also pleased to find out that Mucho Bueno sources its ingredients locally. Even the tortillas for their tacos and chips are made in Philadelphia. The chicken and pork is smoked on their truck and the components of the sandwiches and tacos are homemade.

I have extremely limited knowledge of Korean food, I have only tried Bibimbap, lettuce wraps, and bulgogi. As I got into the line, I planned on getting the bulgogi, but everyone in line before me was ordering the Chicken BBQ or Pork BBQ, so I decided I should try it too.

Here’s where I remind you that I am a spice wuss. Only recently have I tried to delve into the world of chiles. I have stepped up from ordering everything mild to now ordering everything medium, so I’m getting there. When I ordered the Chicken BBQ, I was not expecting chicken marinated and cooked in a sauce of red chiles. Guess I should have done some research first.
